PV-Anlagen für Wohnungen als Balkonkraftwerk sind eine attraktive Möglichkeit für Mieter und Eigentümer von Wohnungen, um erneuerbare Energie zu erzeugen und ihren Stromverbrauch zu reduzieren. Ein Balkonkraftwerk besteht aus 1 - 2 kleinen PV-Anlage, die auf dem Balkon installiert wird. Die Leistung einer PV-Anlage für Balkone beträgt normalerweise zwischen 200 und 600 Watt, je nach Größe des Balkons und der Sonneneinstrahlung. Eine Anlage mit einer Leistung von 300 Watt kann pro Jahr etwa 250 kWh Strom erzeugen, was einer Einsparung von rund 100 Euro entspricht (bei einem Strompreis von 0,40 Euro/kWh).
